Globalmente, a dor de cabeça afeta de maneira mais significativa metade da população adulta, com uma significativa parcela - entre 10 a 20% - sofrendo de enxaqueca. Adicionalmente, 3% da população enfrenta cefaleia crônica, uma condição marcada pela ocorrência de dores de cabeça em 15 ou mais dias por mês, durante um período de três meses ou mais. Este panorama destaca a extensão e a seriedade das cefaleias como questões de saúde pública mundial (Jensen and Stovner, 2008, Ashina, 2020).
A enxaqueca, uma das condições mais comuns e debilitantes da era moderna, frequentemente não recebe a atenção adequada de órgãos públicos de saúde e é subvalorizada pela população em geral. Indivíduos que sofrem dessa condição enfrentam não apenas a dor física intensa, mas também uma significativa discriminação social (Parikh and Young, 2019). No ambiente de trabalho, por exemplo, essas pessoas podem ser estigmatizadas e ridicularizadas por colegas e superiores, que muitas vezes desvalorizam seu sofrimento através de comentários insensíveis ou brincadeiras de mau gosto (Shapiro et al., 2024). Essa falta de compreensão pode levar a consequências graves, como perda de emprego, salários mais baixos e competição desleal por promoções, aumentando o estresse e agravando ainda mais a doença (Gross et al., 2023).
Além dos desafios profissionais, o impacto emocional da enxaqueca é profundo. Muitos pacientes desenvolvem baixa autoestima, depressão e ansiedade significativas (Aydemir et al., 2011). O medo constante de enfrentar uma nova crise de enxaqueca não se limita ao temor da dor (Hursey and Jacks, 1992, Klan et al., 2022), mas também ao receio de serem novamente marginalizados ou tachados como preguiçosos ou pouco produtivos. Essa situação cria um ciclo vicioso de estresse e ansiedade, que não só perpetua, mas também pode intensificar a frequência e gravidade das crises de enxaqueca, comprometendo seriamente a qualidade de vida desses indivíduos (Seng et al., 2022, Lipton et al., 2023). É crucial que haja uma maior conscientização sobre a enxaqueca como uma condição médica séria, necessitando de empatia, apoio adequado e reconhecimento tanto no ambiente de trabalho quanto no contexto social mais amplo.
Neste livro, o objetivo é fornecer informações claras e acessíveis sobre a enxaqueca, apoiadas por bases científicas e referências bibliográficas detalhadas para aqueles que desejam aprofundar-se no assunto. Utilizando uma linguagem simples e direta, este volume oferece uma visão abrangente sobre o que é a enxaqueca, seus aspectos clínicos, os sintomas associados e as estratégias de avaliação do paciente, incluindo exames de imagem, questionários e análises laboratoriais.
Além disso, as opções de tratamento são discutidas, tanto farmacológicas quanto não farmacológicas, e orientações para a adoção de um estilo de vida mais saudável são fornecidas, podendo reduzir significativamente o impacto e a frequência das crises de enxaqueca.
